The adage of there being “two kinds of people in the world” seems even more true nowadays, and no one more cleverly illustrates this than João Rocha. His hilarious ongoing series called 2 Kinds of People shows the little ways that folks are different. While they might seem insignificant, these quirks speak volumes about someone—and are certain to evoke strong opinions no matter how banal.
So, are you the kind of person who adds your milk to cereal, or your cereal to milk? Do you leave your soda tab on the can, or rip it off the first chance you get? You might have an instant preference in these two situations and can’t imagine it any other way. Intellectually, it’s easy to understand that two people can do things in different ways and achieve the same result. But in your gut, it sure seems like your way is the best.
The reactions that Rocha’s minimalist drawings are able to elicit is what makes his project so brilliant. Since we first featured it in 2015, it’s grown in popularity and been made into a book. Called 2 Kinds of People: A Visual Compatibility Quiz, it doubles as a game you can play with someone else; after you both look at one of the comparison illustrations, you then score yourselves and see where you fall on the Scale of Compatibility. Will you be mortal enemies or soulmates? Find out when you buy the book on Amazon.
