Research shows that a lack of social connection has been found to be more harmful than not exercising, heavy drinking, or smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Early last year, wildfires tore through Los Angeles, burning 57,000 acres of land and destroying more than 16,000 structures. Among them was Kelly Akashi’s home. On the evening of January 7, 2025, the artist evacuated the Spanish colonial bungalow that doubled as her studio, taking her cat and a few keepsakes with her. But by the time she returned to her lot in Altadena, only a brick chimney remained.
