Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes is a Staff Editor at My Modern Met and Manager of My Modern Met Store. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in Illustration and MFA in Illustration Practice. Sara is also an embroidery illustrator and writer living in Seattle, Washington. She runs Bear&Bean, a studio where she stitches pet portraits and other beloved creatures. She chronicles the creativity of others through her website Brown Paper Bag and newsletter, Orts. Her latest book is Threads of Treasure: How to Make, Mend, and Find Meaning Through Thread, published in 2014. Sara’s work has been recognized in Be Creative With Workbox, Embroidery Magazine, American Illustration, on Iron and Wine’s album Beast Epic, among others. When she’s not stitching or writing, Sara enjoys planning things that bring together the craft community. She is the co-founder of Camp Craftaway, a day camp for crafty adults with hands-on workshops in the Seattle area.

Photographer Captures People With Diverse Skin Tones to Show Beauty Comes in Every Shade

A year ago, photographer Chesterfield Hector began an ambitious endeavor to capture the vastly different skin tones of people around the world. “Coming from a family where everyone was a different shade,” he tells us in an email, “I have always found the variation in skin tones very interesting.” Now, he's photographed nearly 50 people who each have their own unique complexion. The resulting images are part of his aptly-titled project called Skin Tones.

Can You Guess the News Story by Just the Illustration?

Illustrator Maria Fabrizio starts her day like many of us—she reads the news. What she does next, however, is completely her own. Fabrizio selects one of those headlines, sketches it, digitizes it, and then completes it as an editorial illustration. Afterwards, she posts the finished piece on her site, Wordless News. There, rather than being bombarded with a sensationalist headline or click bait, Fabrizio boasts that the information is “vowel and consonant free.

30 Hummingbirds Gather in Bird Bath for a Mini Pool Party Ritual

Humans aren’t the only ones that get to enjoy pool parties. Bird baths also encourage these sorts of enthusiastic gatherings—splashing and all. Backyard nature store Wild Wings, which specializes in fountains and feed, captured this delightful video of a massive hummingbird bath. In less than a minute of footage, it shows 30 of the winged creatures enjoying the refreshing cool of bubbling water. As hummingbirds flutter into the scene, each has their own particular bathing style.

Photographer Spends Hours in the Ocean Capturing the Different “Moods” of Waves

Photographer Matt Burgess captures the arresting beauty of the open waters through his hypnotic ocean wave photography. Located in Victoria, Australia, he spends hours in the salty sea with its white-capped crests and swirling colors, documenting these mesmerizing moments that are now frozen in time. The results showcase the different “personalities” that the ocean has to offer; sometimes, the waters are relatively tranquil, and you can see far beyond its horizon onto dry land.
