A bookend might sound like an unnecessary piece of decor, but have you ever tried to arrange your shelf without one? Getting a collection of books to stand upright is hard to do without one of these handy pieces of decor. Luckily, designers everywhere are making creative bookends that are both practical and add statement-making style to your home.

Clever bookends go beyond their design to transform a shelf into a playful scene. Many makers do this by cutting thin sheets of metal into characters, plants, architecture, and even UFOs. When placed between books, these pieces come to life. Artori Design’s Supergal bookend, for instance, uses this idea to make it look as though the texts are about to fall down. But thanks to their Wonder Woman-esque figure, everything stays upright. The result is a whimsical conversation piece.

If the character-driven bookends don’t appeal to you, that’s okay—there are plenty of other styles to choose from. Concrete objects are a popular choice for fans of minimalism.
