With the final season of Game of Thrones now underway, people everywhere are celebrating the epic drama. Fender, the legendary musical instrument manufacturer, has spent the past two years working on their own tribute to the HBO show. They recently introduced a set of three handcrafted Game of Thrones guitars, dubbed the Sigil collection, that is based on three fan-favorite houses—House Stark, House Lannister, and House Targaryen.
Each house has its own model of guitar: Stark has the Telecaster; Lannister is on the Jaguar; Targaryen rocks the Stratocaster. Although the instruments are all different, they each went through the same meticulous creative process to ensure their authenticity to the series and that they would bring the story to life for fans and guitar players alike. Ron Thorn, Fender’s Principal Master Builder, handcrafted these pieces and drew his inspiration from the houses' family sigils, costumes, armor, weapons, and locations in Westeros.
The resulting instruments are a love letter to both the fantastical story and the artistry that goes into producing a guitar. They are as sturdy and functional as they are ornate and beautiful; the details include dragon scale carvings, an engraved Dire Wolf, and gold-plated pickguards. “Ron Thorn at Fender has built three beautiful, GoT-inspired works of art, and you can out-shred your enemies with all of them,” says D.B. Weiss, who serves as one of the series’ creators and show-runner. “The craftsmanship and attention to detail reminds me a lot of what we saw in our costume and armory shops, and on our sets. I hope these make a few other people 1/1000th as happy as they make me.”
The Sigil collection is available for purchase through the Fender Custom Shop, and the price tags match the 300+ hours spent creating the series. The guitars start at $25,000 and each instrument includes its own bespoke guitar case.
