In these challenging times, we could all use some good news. Luckily, illustrator Mauro Gatti has us covered. For years, he has been chronicling the positive side of humanity through his popular Instagram account The Happy Broadcast. Each post features a charming digital drawing with a sentence or two about something good that is happening in the world. As information about COVID-19 has dominated the news over the past few months, Gatti has shifted his focus and primarily shared information about the virus. But he's doing so in his signature style and finding the bright light in these dark times.
From reporting on Italy’s COVID-19 recoveries to sharing amazing acts of kindness to announcing gigantic falls in CO2 emissions, The Happy Broadcast highlights how, together, we are making a difference. “While it’s important to report about the danger of coronavirus so we can prevent it from happening again in this aggressive form,” Gatti tells My Modern Met, “I believe there is much good news at this moment that just needs to be found and promoted.”
People have expressed gratitude about Gatti's type of coverage. “I think that is what followers appreciated the most,” he explains, “a source of news that doesn’t just report about deaths and scary facts.” Collecting the uplifting news stories and creating colorful illustrations is as therapeutic for him as it is for his audience. “It helped me a great deal. Being able to balance the fear-mongering and click-baiting headlines with some positivity and hope in the people of this world is key to a more optimistic life. And since the creation of The Happy Broadcast, I feel like the world is not the frightening place portrayed by many media outlets.”
So, what's his favorite good news as of late? “I’m a big planet and animal lover so I really enjoyed all the stories about nature taking back some of the spaces that we have occupied.”
Through his Instagram account The Happy Broadcast, illustrator Mauro Gatti shares uplifting news that has come out of COVID-19.
