Cats have an undeniable affinity for small safe spaces. They often opt to hop into a cardboard box, but who wants used packaging lying around their home? Luckily, Portuguese designer João Teixeira has designed a clever cat bed with a feline’s preference in mind, without sacrificing style. Teixeira's design boasts modern minimalism with high functionality and a Scandanavian influence. Aptly named Igloo, this multifunctional pet haven hideaway provides a dual purpose for those who love coffee as much as their cats—it doubles as a coffee table.
Teixeira notes on his website that the idea began with the sphere-shaped cat bed. It's used not only as a nifty design element, but also takes into consideration how cats like to curl up and lie down. The minimalist furniture piece offers a light, clean aesthetic that balances elegance and casual style. “Since the bed is made out of plastic,” Teixeira explains on his website, “I wanted to create an interesting contrast with materials and shapes, so that the product could be used by cats but also feel like a sleek piece of furniture.”
The designer added cutouts on the table top to magnify a sense of sophistication, and the white wooden top creates a relationship with the plastic white capsule below. The table legs are smoothed to a rounded finish. The four points of intersection between the legs and the sphere, where white meets wood, are an elegant and visually appealing solution.
