Artist Reimagines Cats as Royalty in Traditional Portraits of People

When looking at old works of art, it's not uncommon to find a feline companion somewhere in the composition. Artist Galina Bugaevskaya (aka Cat Universe on Instagram), however, reimagines traditional portraits where cats are the stars. Her ongoing series features kitties donned in historical costumes and jewelry, posing as noblity. Bugaevskaya has been creating her Cat Universe for over three years. The premise of the project is to place images of cats—usually via Photoshop—in unexpected situations.

Astrophotographer Spends Over 100 Hours Capturing Dazzling “Eye of God”

Planetary scientist and astrophotographer Connor Matherne invested two years and over 100 hours of exposure time to create a stunning image of the Helix Nebula. Also known as the Eye of God, it is one of the closest planetary nebulae to Earth. Sitting at about 650 light-years away from Earth in the Aquarius constellation, this cloud of gas and dust is a sight to behold.

Artist Rafael Araujo expresses his love of nature through geometry. Incorporating the golden spiral and helixes into his compositions, he uses these concepts as the basis for shells and kaleidoscopes of butterflies. The results are drawings in which the natural elements are sketched and colored in while the geometric guiding lines are left on the page.

Cincinnati Zoo Announces the Name of Newborn Hippo

On August 3, 2022, the Cincinnati Zoo welcomed an adorable male baby hippo. The zoo team held a fan vote to decide on the name for the newest member of the hippo family, and it came down to a decision between Fritz and Ferguson. After over 200,000 votes were cast, the zookeepers happily announced that the chosen name for the hippo is…Fritz!
