Jack-O’-Lanterns Glow With Incredible Pop Culture-Inspired Designs

Pumpkin Carving by Alex Wer The Pumpkin Geek

From spooktastic makeup to creative costumes, Halloween is an exciting time to show off your creativity. For pumpkin carving artist Alex Wer (aka The Pumpkin Geek), tis the season for him to shine. But rather than carve triangle eyes and crooked smiles, the award-winning creative crafts custom pumpkin carvings inspired by movie characters and pop culture icons. Wer’s hand-carved masterpieces are so impressive, it would be a shame for them to wilt away each year. That’s why he hand-carves onto faux craft pumpkins, so they’ll last forever.

Wer began pumpkin carving 10 years ago (during Halloween of 2009) when his wife asked him if he could carve a jack-o'-lantern featuring her company's logo. His “orange empire” began to grow and in 2013, he even won the inaugural Geekie Award for Best Art/Craft. In 2017, Wer quit his day job to pursue pumpkin carving full time, and his leap of faith paid off—he has created pumpkin art for Netflix, ESPN, Legendary Entertainment, and has even been featured in People Magazine.

It’s clear to see why Wer’s pumpkin art is so popular—each hand-carved sculpture features an incredible amount of detail. To achieve this, the artist developed his own “4 color” carving technique, involving cutting and carving different layers to create depth. “1 area is completely cutout, 2 different levels of depth, and finally, a layer untouched for the darkest portion of the image,” explains Wer. “I found this style gave me great versatility and the most realistic final product and seemed to impress my clients!” Each pumpkin can take up to 6 hours to complete, depending on the complexity of the design. The artist says, “I have now moved up to 5 layers of carving…always trying to get that ‘perfect carve!’”
