A 6-year-old girl has sent shockwaves in the world of Rubik’s Cube solving, aka speedcubing. Lian Yunzhi, from China, posted averages of 4.52 and 4.27 seconds, after solving the 3×3 puzzle five times at two World Cube Association certified competitions in Wuhan and Guangzhou. With this, she has broken the women’s world record for solving a Rubik’s Cube.
The girl, nicknamed “Zhizhi,” first got into the Rubik’s Cube when her parents enrolled her in an extracurricular class, alongside other activities like gymnastics, music, and dance lessons. After some time, they realized that, out of all the things she was trying, the Rubik’s Cube was the best at fostering her comprehensive abilities, and so she started devoting more of her time to it.
“Solving a Rubik’s Cube improves focus, memory, logical thinking, spatial awareness, and helps develop a healthy mindset toward winning and losing,” her mother, Lin Yangxi, told local media outlets. “It’s not just about blindly memorizing formulas, but using logical reasoning to find optimal solutions.”
Getting to this stage didn’t come naturally to Yunzhi; instead, it’s the result of hard work. After some time perfecting her technique, she got stuck at the eight-second mark—which is still impressive for a young child. This prompted her parents to find a specialist teacher in Shanghai. Now, she has mastered more than 1,300 solving algorithms and practices for two to three hours on weekdays. On weekends, she sometimes devotes up to six hours to the cube, although she spends most of that time at competitions and seeing friends.
Lin has shared that breaking the world record is a “dream come true” for her daughter, who is happy pursuing her own goals—even if it comes at the cost of less playtime. “The whole school knows her now,” Lin t0ld The Guardian. “The teacher told me that older students came to her classroom with slips of paper asking for her autograph, crowding the room. She has gained a lot of love and attention through cubing.”
