Amazing Contest Highlights the World’s Best Storm Photography of the Year

Acclaimed storm photographer Mike Olbinski is passionate about his craft. And so he wanted to create a place for other storm photographers to show off their work and be rewarded at the same time. Thus, Storm Photos of the Year—affectionately known as The Stormys—was born. Now in its second year, the contest has just announced winners across three categories.

Macro Photos Reveal the Often Unseen Beauty and Diversity of Slime Molds

Over 900 species can be identified as slime mold. Formerly thought of as fungi, these small organisms help break down dead vegetation. With so many species, there is a rich diversity to slime mold and this is what first captured the attention of photographer Barry Webb. He'd already been taking photographs of fungi for many years when slime mold caught his attention two years ago. Since then, he hasn't turned back.

Artist Manipulates Reality in Mind-Bending Surrealist Sculptures

Hong Kong-based artist Johnson Tsang creates porcelain works of art with a twist—oftentimes, literally. He sculpts rubbery and realistic human faces that are distorted in mind-bending ways reminiscent of Surrealist paintings. Looking at each one feels like a view into Tsang's subconscious. In some of the busts, hands emerge from the head to manipulate the face, such as scraping through the facial features or stretching the skin beyond the skull to reveal empty space within.

Anatomical Embroideries Offer a Dazzling Look at the Human Body Beneath the Skin

A needle and thread do well depicting the anatomy of the human body. After all, one type of medical procedure literally involves stitching the body back together. Artist Amber Griffiths, aka Ambroidering, crafts portraits that reveal what’s beneath the skin, and she uses these embroidery tools to convey muscle groups, nerves, and more. Often, she’ll incorporate beading in the piece, whether that’s in recreating strands of golden hair or blue veins.
