Filipino designer Kenneth Cobonpue has partnered with Disney and Lucasfilm to create a high-end, handmade furniture collection inspired by the Star Wars franchise. The idea to bring deep space fantasy to your living room might sound novel, but the end results are both sleek and stylish.
Cobonpue’s Star Wars-themed collection officially launched in April 2019 at Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italy, and it’s received plenty of online attention ever since. Each carefully thought-out design is based on iconic Star Wars characters and elements, but still upholds Cobonpue’s distinct sophisticated style.
“I wasn’t sure how to marry my design philosophy and language with that of the Star Wars franchise, but I decided to view it simply as a design challenge,” says Cobonpue. “I knew I needed to incorporate the various shapes and motifs from the world of Star Wars sufficiently enough to make them recognizable, but to also stop short of being too literal. Finding that balance proved to be the project’s biggest challenge for me.”
The epic collection includes the Imperial Wings armchair that features spanning arms with handwoven polyethylene, mirroring the form of the iconic Imperial TIE starfighter. The Darth Sidious armchair features a backrest with a hood, capturing the Sith Lord’s formidable presence. The Little Jedi light comprises linked mini Jedi Knight figurines holding light sabers which cleverly act as the light source, and there’s even a shaggy rocking stool that emulates everyone’s favorite Wookiee warrior—Chewbacca.
