Expansive Exhibition of Charcoal Showcases It in Many Monumental Forms

Artist Lee Bae brings more than five decades of artistic practice to Museum SAN in Wonju, South Korea, with En attendant. This large-scale exhibition is devoted to Bae’s sustained exploration of charcoal, transformation, and the cycles of nature. The exhibition also marks the first solo presentation by a Korean artist since the museum opened. It brings together painting, sculpture, installation, and video across six spaces, extending from the museum’s interior galleries into its surrounding landscape.

Born and raised in Singapore where there’s no real change in temperature or daylight between the seasons, artist Dawn Ng aims to make the passage of time more visible. She uses melting ice, pigments, photography, and film to explore gradual transformation and the impermanence of life. Ng’s striking Into Air series, created between 2017 and 2023, features large sculptural blocks of ice layered with sand and colorful pigments.
