In February 2024, the Gonzalez family threw a party to celebrate Valentine's Day. There were matching pink t-shirts, a wall filled with heart-shaped balloon, and games to pass the time. They split the guests into two groups—men and women—aiming to see which gender would do best in each task. When it came time for a hula hoop challenge, the results were clear. And now, the video of the moment has gone viral, sparking a debate about “male vs. female intelligence.”

The game is simple. The group has to pass through a hula hoop, from one person onto the next, until the last teammate has released the hoop. They stand hand in hand, except for those on the edges, meaning they are at the mercy of their bodies to move the hula hoop along. Whoever finishes the challenge in the shortest amount of time wins.

The Gonzalezes had the men go first. They really struggled to pass the hula hoop from one person to the next, relying on awkward little jumps and bumps—the fact that it didn't cause anyone to fall down is sheer luck. When it was the women's turn, a clever display of strategy and teamwork unfolded. The first woman went through the hoop and held it for all the other women to cross through while holding hands. In the video, a man can be heard shouting, “What is this? That's not fair,” but the damage is done.  The endeavor took the men 32 seconds; the women did it in almost half the time—17 seconds.

The Miami-based family shared their findings with the world. While some have taken the video as proof that women are smarter than men, the family has leaned into the humor of it, replying with laughing emojis to comments such as, “That's how quickly we decipher the inconveniences and make them convenient.”
