Illustrator Yehuda Devir is no stranger to sharing his life through art. For years, he has turned everyday moments with his wife Maya into charming—and often hilarious—online couple comics. Through his ongoing series called One of Those Days, he and Maya chronicle their relationship, from the silly to the mundane and beyond. After years of enjoying the comics, you can’t help but feel like you’re friends with them.
Determined to share the joyful and challenging parts of their life together, Yehuda recently documented their journey to getting pregnant. He did so with his usual humor and wit, but he didn’t sugarcoat the ups and downs of creating life—from memorizing ovulation schedules to playing alchemist with baby potions. “We had been trying to conceive for about a year,” Yehuda explains. “While doing so, we’ve realized that a family of our own is the biggest creation we can hope for.”
Like many folks, they struggled with the feeling of powerlessness upon discovering that for that month, they weren’t pregnant. To get through these hard times, they leaned on one another for support. “We’ve been together for such a long time that our friendship and love seem so strong,” Yehuda said, “it feels like we can achieve everything if we work together. Challenges make us stronger.”
On December 20, 2018, Yehuda and Maya were elated to announce their pregnancy, and congratulations from around the world poured in. For those struggling with the same issues and feelings of helplessness, Yehuda hopes that telling their story will be of comfort to them. “Readers see their life [pictured] and feel that they are not alone,” he offered. “There are other people somewhere in the world who are just like them, who experience ups and downs in their relationships [as well] and it gives [them] a sense of relevance.”
