FireVase Flower vase thrown like a grenade to put out fires from r/Damnthatsinteresting
Fire extinguishers are a vital piece of safety equipment, but they’re not always readily available at home. In South Korea for example, the law requires every living space to have one, but less than 60% of households actually own one. That’s why Samsung subsidiary Cheil Worldwide designed Firevase for Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance: a flower vase that you literally throw at a fire to put it out.
It might look decorative, but this pretty vase doubles as a secret fire-fighting weapon. While the small inner chamber holds the water for the flowers, the outer part is filled with potassium carbonate. When the vase is smashed, the colorless gas quickly cools and suppresses oxygen, snuffing out the flames before they spread.
The clever invention was first rolled out in South Korea, where more than 100,000 were produced as part of a campaign to promote home fire extinguishers. As a result, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance said that 81% of Firevase users confirmed that they were now more aware of the importance of fire safety at home. The company’s press release says, “With the strategy to equip Koreans that were indifferent to fire safety with fire extinguishers, we created one that was unique so it would increase their desire to have one.”
