LEGO Is Releasing a Record-Breaking 12,000-Piece Set of Spain’s Sagrada Família

The Sagrada Família recently became the world’s tallest church with the completion of the central tower, the highest point of the basilica. In celebration of this landmark achievement, LEGO appears to be releasing an equally sizable set. There are reports that the toy company will be releasing a 12,060-piece LEGO Architecture set of Antoni Gaudí’s masterpiece in Barcelona, making it the largest set (in terms of the number of pieces it consists of) in the company’s history.

The unofficially released concept was leaked by someone known as Chief Wiggum, who has a history of correctly predicting sets before they’re officially announced. According to them, the Sagrada Família LEGO set will drop on July 1, following the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death on June 10.

The high piece count would assure a detailed depiction of the many elements that make up this striking building, from the facades that tell the life story of Jesus, to the rainbow-hued stained glass windows that fill the basilica with color, to its 18 spires. If true, it would dethrone current record holder for the largest set by number of pieces, the Art World Map, which features 11,695 LEGO bricks.

The Sagrada Família itself is not close to being ready, as works on the Glory facade, the largest of them all, could extend the construction for several more years. This is particularly because the residential building in front of the basilica would have to be demolished. Given these setbacks, it’s hard to know of LEGO will base its set on the existing structure or on the known plans for the completed church. Either way, it’s sure to become a fan favorite for LEGO lovers.

Reports indicate that LEGO will be releasing a 12,060-piece LEGO Architecture set of the Sagrada Família later this year.
