Nostalgic toy-lovers will jump for joy when they see LEGO’s latest release. In honor of the company’s original wooden minifigure design from 1978, LEGO has partnered with Room Copenhagen to launch a limited edition revamp of the first toy. Standing at 7 inches tall, the LEGO Original Wooden Minifigure is a 5:1 scale version of the classic design.
The wooden figure’s head and body are made from FSC-certified oak, with the “LEGO” logo laser cut into the protruding stud atop the figurine’s head. The only non-wooden element is its trademark LEGO plastic hands—making this toy the first LEGO product to include both wood and plastic since 1959’s release of the 1130 Bedford fire truck.
Unlike most LEGO products—which are typically designed to be built and/or played with—this commemorative figure was made primarily for a decorative and celebratory purpose—something toy enthusiasts with an aesthetic eye will surely appreciate. The wooden figurine arrives in an elegant gift box that features the toy resting against a LEGO-printed backdrop. Within the specialized set is a polybag containing 29 LEGOs, and a 28-page booklet that recounts the minifigure’s history and the methodologies behind the wooden toy’s design.
LEGO also encourages those who purchase this particular minifigure to transform their tiny toy, and to communicate their creative results with others. (The gift box actually includes tips from professional LEGO designers on how to personalize your wooden minifigure.) LEGO says, “Owners can unleash their creativity to dress up, paint, or do whatever they want to customize the minifigure in unique ways, and then show off their creations via social media using #LEGOOriginals.”
The LEGO Originals Wooden Minifigure is currently available for $120 at a pop-up shop in Covent Garden, London, and will be officially released via the LEGO website on November 8, 2019.
Nostalgic toy collectors will love the retro wooden design of LEGO’s latest minifigure.
Based off of the original LEGO minifigure design of 1978, this retro toy is made of oak with trademark plastic LEGO hands.
LEGO Originals Wooden Minifigures are also customizable, so enthusiasts can make the classic toy their own.
