Police Officers Surprise an Autistic Man With Birthday Celebration After Midnight 911 Call

Although some of us might not like to admit it, most of us want someone to celebrate our birthday with. Loneliness can affect us at any age, reminding us just how important human connection really is. A video from May 2024 that has recently resurfaced captures how a simple act of kindness can make someone’s day. It shows two Boston police officers responding after a 25-year-old autistic man named Chris called 911 just after midnight with an unusual request: he simply wanted someone to wish him a happy birthday.

Rather than scold or fine Chris for “wasting police time,” officers Israel Bracho and Franklin Ortiz decided to make his night special instead. On their way to his home, they stopped to pick up a cupcake and birthday candles before surprising him at his front door. After singing “Happy Birthday,” inviting him to blow out his candles, and encouraging him to make a wish, the officers asked Chris if there was anything else he needed. Chris said with a smile, “This is all I could ever ask for.”

Many people online were moved by the viral video, with some commenting on how Chris must have felt. One person—who also has autism—wrote, “Autism is really lonely. We wanna do the normal things so bad. Probably genuinely the only number he knew and had. I’m sorry but I’m glad they did this.” Others praised the two officers for their kindness. One person commented, “The U.S. desperately needs more cops like them,” while another pointed out, “Loneliness really does kill some, definitely was an emergency.”
