Describing her work as “magical realism,” award-winning, Tel Aviv-based illustrator Gabriella Barouch creates captivating images that evoke childhood nostalgia. Her distinct visual language is characterized by delicate lines and a slightly muted color palette that’s influenced by her love of old picture books.

Each drawing depicts fantastical scenes where animals and humans are friends. Barouch plays with scale, often allowing animals to be the dominant subject, while humans are often depicted as small, fairy-like characters. “I'm mostly inspired by music, poetry, storybooks, nature, and other artists,” Barouch tells My Modern Met. “I adore miniatures and am very inspired by small objects (like a nutshell, acorn, buttons etc), I love playing with their scale, I think it creates magic.”

Each whimsical scene tells its own story, showcasing Barouch’s playful imagination and attention to detail. In one piece, a huge whale carries an entire island and village on its back while it glides through the ocean, and in another, a miniature girl rides on a paper origami bird.
