Textile artist Katerina Marchenko is known for her delicate embroidery on transparent tulle, creating designs that seem to float in midair. But her artistry extends beyond the boundaries of traditional embroidery hoops—Marchenko transforms her intricate stitches into large-scale works and even repurposes old dinner plates as unconventional canvases.
Marchenko combines traditional textile techniques with a distinctive painterly style, weaving colorful threads into stunning works of art. Her creations often feature nature-inspired motifs—such as butterflies and flowers—delicately intertwined with the female form.
One of Marchenko’s latest large-scale pieces, Touché Amore, elegantly portrays a female figure adorned with vines, flowers, and butterflies. In an Instagram video, she offers a behind-the-scenes look at her creative process, showing how she meticulously adds bold, expressive stitches by hand to the tulle, which hangs on the wall like a canvas.
In another project, Marchenko teamed up with artist Artashes Sardarian to transform old ceramic plates into stunning works of art. Together, they added embroidered hands and touches of gold thread, channeling the spirit of the Japanese kintsugi technique. Marchenko hopes this collection inspires people to rethink what they throw away and find creative ways to give old items a second life.
“People got used to purchasing products and using them several times, then getting bored and throwing them away,” she writes on Instagram. That’s why we decided to collect and modernise broken unwanted but beautiful plates from all over the world, to capture the frozen beauty in broken plates with their own history.” Marchenko adds, “We wanted people to know that their unwanted belongings can be transformed to something brand new and beautiful.”
