Whether welcoming or concealing, doors are intriguing designs with their own personalities. Each one has its own distinct character, inviting passersby to guess who or what could possibly be behind it. Inspired by old entryways, Russian artists Nikita and Nastya (of Walking Fish) create one-of-a-kind journals featuring wooden covers that look just like real doors in miniature.
From aged-looking entries with raised panels to more elaborate gateways featuring brass embellishments, each handmade book cover looks just like a door you might find in the hidden nooks of old European towns. In fact, that’s exactly where Nikita and Nastya get their inspiration from. Last summer, they visited Finland, Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany, where they took over 300 photos of doors. The pair says, “Many of them have already taken shape in our notebooks, others are waiting for their turn.”
Each unique notebook is made in Nikita and Nastya’s Saint-Petersburg-based workshop. The cover is made from high-quality plywood, painted by hand using acrylics, and glazed with a water-based varnish. Customers can even choose between white or brown craft paper, and whether it’s lined or unlined. Nikita and Nastya then bind each journal together using natural high-quality leather. These notebooks are perfect for writing or drawing your inner thoughts, allowing you to keep your most intimate secrets literally behind closed doors!
