11-Year-Old Reads for 100 Hours To Shelter Animals While They Wait for Forever Homes

For some shelter animals, a quiet voice can make a frightening place feel a little more comforting. For more than two years, 11-year-old Nehemiah Turner has offered that comfort one story at a time. In June 2026, Turner became the first child in the Jacksonville Humane Society’s Pawsitive Reading program to reach 100 volunteer hours. The Jacksonville Humane Society celebrated the milestone with a certificate.

Last Circus Elephant in Portugal Becomes First Resident of New Animal Sanctuary

In 2018, Portugal banned wild animals in circuses under a law that fully took effect in 2024. With that, Julie, Portugal’s last circus elephant, was retired from performance. Circo Víctor Hugo Cardinali, which was in possession of Julie, reached an agreement with Pangea Trust, a new sanctuary in Alentejo, Portugal, devoted to giving a forever home to elephants in need, which will be welcoming her. Now, Julie has become the sanctuary’s first resident.

Artist Uses Traditional Basketry Techniques To Create Wearable Woven Sculptures

A towering woven head rises nearly as tall as its maker, while mysterious figures dressed in intricate basket-woven costumes appear somewhere between folklore, sculpture, and performance. These surreal creations come from British artist Lewis Prosser, who transforms traditional willow weaving into monumental artworks that challenge the boundaries between craft and contemporary art. Working from his studio in Penarth, South Wales, Prosser uses traditional basketry techniques to create monumental sculptures, wearable costumes, and immersive performances.
